| Title |
The Great Water Quality Data Drive
|
| Objective |
To improve the global state of water quality monitoring and assessment by broadening geospatial, temporal and parameter coverage, for all water resources. To fill water quality data gaps, while promoting highest standards of data integrity.
|
| Contents |
- A specific call to all water authorities to submit data and information on all surface and groundwater resources - Monitoring stations include baseline, impact, trend and flux stations. - Data from all types of inland aquatic environments are important for GEMS/Water. These include surface waters such as lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers, estuaries, and wetlands; and ground water aquifers. - QA/QC and data integrity standards.
|
| Means of Implementation |
- Widespread global data coverage implies that participation by all countries is essential. Key geographic areas include: Central America and the Caribbean islands, South America, Central Asia, Africa and the small Pacific Islands. This initiative is important for all water quality monitoring institutions in every country, including Governments, universities and research centres.

| Expected Outcome(S) |
- increased number of participants in GEMS/Water data activities - improved water quality assessments at regional and global levels - improved contributions to international environmental assessments, i.e. WWAP - The main outcome will be a strengthened scientific basis for global and regional water assessments and early warning. The results of the Data Drive will be reported to key UN fora, such as the UNEP Governing Council (February 2005, Nairobi) and the 13th
|
Relevance to the Plan of Implementation of WSSD |
All areas pertaining to scientific basis to environmental decision-making; and to the need for monitoring and information systems; i.e. Para. 26, 35c and 59c
There is a need for reliable, current data and information about water resources at the global level, for the water and sanitation targets to be measured.
